Program Overview
Often ignored in Europe, Scandinavian and Finnish composers developed their own distinctive voices. The frequent bleakness and sweeping landscapes dotted with color and motion, produced music of grand scale and unique tonal imagery. Nordic composers, past and present have written generously for winds. While Jean Sibelius is arguably the only Nordic composer to enjoy international recognition during his lifetime, the eternally popular quintet of Carl Nielsen and new works by international superstars Esa-Pekka Salonen and Anders Hillborg make for a unified program, yet reflective of each composer’s individual heritage.
